Amapondo Children's Project

Morning class in Sisonke School

The project has been in existence over two years informally, and received NPO status in June 2006. The intention of the project is two fold. Firstly, we want to empower the minds and spark the initiative of the community of Port St. John's; helping people help themselves. Secondly we want to present an affordable and practical volunteer program.

We provide an atmosphere conducive to a quality volunteer experience whilst simultaneously offering much needed academic assistance and extra curricular activities to local school children. The benefits are many; cultural exchange, linguistic immersion and the provision of a supplemental education outside the classroom-both academically and socially.

In the past the project worked closely with Eluxolweni Child Care Programme as well as local schools in the area. In order for the project to expand to its full potential, a community resource centre has been established to respond to the community's needs more effectively. We pride ourselves on being a smaller grass roots project, motivated through assertive action on behalf of volunteers.

Our volunteers directly fund the project, but we also rely on outside donations. The flexibility of our project allows volunteers to develop and implement their own curriculum or sub projects.Participants guide their volunteer experience by utilizing skills of their own on the ground level.

ACP Current Community Involvement

We are involved in a number of programs within the community and volunteers are invited to get involved with any or all of these on offer.
